If you’re a tech head with an ear to the ground for the latest and greatest smartphones, you’d have hear of the Pocophone F1 which launched back in 2018. For the time, coming with the Snapdragon 845 SoC at a fraction of what flagships cost, it was ahead of the game. But after a long slumber, Poco Global revived recently, and now they’ve unveiled that the Pocophone F1 successor is on its way on May 12.

Well, more specifically, all the really mentioned was a new device coming, but according to leaks, it’s the POCO F2 Pro or Pocophone F2 or something along those lines. The name isn’t very clearly mentioned just yet.
The twist in the story is, based on the information we know from previous rumours, the Poco F2 Pro will be a re-skinned Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro. And while it’s a very attractive package for what it offers, the K30 Pro is out of the price range of Poco’s brand strategy, which could hint at a higher priced POCO F2 Pro. Secondly, the POCO F2 Pro would house a 60Hz refresh rate, as it stays true to the K30 Pro. So, we’re already losing out on two important factors of smartphones already.
But other rumoured specs on the POCO F2 Pro are looking swell. If we check back on Redmi’s K30 Pro is packing, we can expect similar specs on the POCO F2 Pro. For the internals, the K30 Pro lineup is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, with UFS 3.1-based internal storage and LPDD5 RAM. The storage and RAM variants range from 6GB/128GB to 8GB/258GB. It also has a headphone jack, in-display fingerprint sensor, 5G support and Wi-Fi 6.
It also comes with a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a max brightness level of 1200 nits for HDR10+ content. But like I mentioned earlier, the POCO F2 Pro would be limited to a 60Hz refresh rate.
For their cameras, the POCO F2 Pro should house a quad cam setup of 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide, 5MP macro camera and 2MP depth sensor. On the front, it’ll pack a 20MP selfie pop-up camera.
This all looks fine and dandy, but if POCO is able to really penetrate at a killer price point, this will truly be the flagship killer. But if it, like many smartphones released in 2020, charge a premium? I’m not sure how enthusiastic fans would be about it. Before I get ahead of myself, let’s wait and see what happens on May 12.
