Only 3 Out Of 5 Malaysians Abided To The Movement Control Order; Will Cops Be Forced To Take Sterner Measures?

With the Covid-19 virus spreading like wildfire, the unprecedented Movement Control Order is well and truly in effect but based on the statistics given by Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Malaysian’s still don’t seem to fully grasp the severity of the situation and the importance of social distancing.

It turns out that only 60% or 3 out of every 5 Malaysians abided by the Movement Control Order, resulting in the police having to marshal its personnel to control the situation by imposing roadblocks. Believe it or not, 504 roadblocks took place nationwide yesterday.

These roadblocks aren’t like your conventional roadblocks where they check if you’ve been driving under the influence of alcohol or running away from a crime but instead designed to advise Malaysian’s that it is against the law to be out and about and that they should head home.

“6,135 vehicles have been checked by these roadblocks, and as of today the police are taking an advisory stance,”

The minister also warned that if public compliance should still not be forthcoming, authorities will have little choice but to enforce harsher actions under the law.

“I do not believe this will be necessary should compliance arise over time. All district police chiefs have been instructed to take action, but the early stage is to broadcast the need for everyone to remain in their homes.

“Yesterday we were shown videos from the police that the broadcast has already been implemented nationwide. In addition to the reminder that we maintain social distancing whenever we step out to buy daily necessities, the Health Ministry has also informed me that small children should not be brought along for shopping during this time, so as to avoid anything bad,”

The importance of social distancing cannot be underplayed. Whether we feel fine or whether we don’t care, the lives of others are at stake. Doctors around the country are risking their lives by being on the frontline and we’re not doing them any favours by continuing to go out. Help them help us by staying put at home and waiting this out.

As of right now, the government has been very lenient with the MCO, and understandably so, but should we continue to turn a blind eye to it, we’ll only have ourselves to blame when it gets to a point where we’re not even allowed out of our houses.
