In a recent announcement, Nintendo will unveiling a new set of guidelines by lifting some of its heavy restrictions over how YouTube content creators can monetize gameplay and livestream content.
Content creators on the video sharing platform will no longer have to join Nintendo’s controversial partner program but instead those who are already in YouTube’s Partner Program will simply qualify. Due to its policy change, Nintendo will be closing its Creators Program sometime next month.
“As long as you follow some basic rules, we will not object to your use of gameplay footage and/or screenshots captured from games for which Nintendo owns the copyright in the content you create for appropriate video and image sharing sites,” a statement on Nintendo’s website reads.
The new guidelines also include in providing unique commentary or “creative input” which means that Let’s Plays or livestreams that include original commentary are acceptable. Prior to this, Nintendo specified that only videos uploaded through Nintento’s Partner Program were viable for AdSense income.
Furthermore, Nintendo’s new rules states that if creators “want to use the intellectual property of a third party, you are responsible for obtaining any necessary third-party permissions.” The decision may come as a victory to YouTube creators who want to use gameplay footage. Nintendo’s new guidelines also extend to Twitch, where those within the Twitch Partner program can also now earn ad revenue on their streams.
