LG Electronics will introduce the first of a suite of AI technologies for its smartphones at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, featuring in the 2018 version of the LG V30,

Having made the announcement on its AI research and at LG ThinQ at CES this year, the technology is now being implemented in its next generation smartphone focusing primarily on the camera and voice recognition. The new V30 will have some of the most up to date camera features including dual lens and wide-angle low distortion lens plus an all glass Crystal Clear lens functioning seamlessly with the Vision AI.

How the AI works is it takes the photo taking mode away from the user and automatically analyses objects and recommends the best shooting mode: portrait, food, pet, landscape, city, flower, sunrise, and sunset. The angle of view, color, reflections, backlighting, and saturation levels are all taken into consideration as the phone analyses images in its database to determine what the camera is focusing on in order to recommend the best setting. For example, pointing the camera at a plate of pasta will result in food mode being invoked, resulting in warmer colors and heightened sharpening for the most appetizing shot possible.

To make this possible LG worked with partners in image recognition to scan through over a 100 million images in order to develop the phone’s image recognition algorithms. Over one thousand unique image categories were created for more accurate image analysis. There are also features for smart shopping by just pointing the camera at an object, the best deals for the item will be displayed.

Using Google Assistant, LG has developed simple commands for photo taking that is exclusive for the V30 and increased from 23 commands in 2017 it has now 32 voice AI functions. Making AI the centre of everything it does, the company is gearing towards the next evolution of technology with artificial intelligence.

“As we communicated last month at CES, the future for LG lies in AI, not just hardware specs and processing speeds,” said Ha Jeung-uk, senior vice president and business unit leader for LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

LG together with its peers will be showcasing the V30 at MWC this year, hoping to make headwinds in the expanding smartphone universe.
