Data leaks are the talk of the town these days with the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal; hence, the new Cloudflare DNS is completely focused on preventing such issues from occurring again. In Malaysia, a string of recent domestic data leaks over the past year means that it remains a concern here; not just Facebook data, but more confidential information such as banking details as well. With this Cloudflare announcement, known as the new 1.1.1.1 DNS tool, it will not only protect user data from pesky ISPs, it will also speed up Internet bandwidth.

Primarily, the new Cloudflare DNS will prevent ISPs from collecting Internet data. By changing the DNS to Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 address, users will be giving Cloudflare the task of handling DNS requests. Essentially, what the service does is match the URL users are attempting to visit with their own IP addresses. Typically, not touching the DNS settings means letting the ISPs handle that aspect. This inadvertently gives them access to all the data that passes through their network.

As such, by using 1.1.1.1, users can keep prevent ISPs from snooping on what they are browsing. Now, wait a minute, won’t this mean Cloudflare now has all that data instead? Well, understandably, it’s best to take the promises it is making with a pinch of salt. Even so, Matthew Prince, Cloudflare CEO, insists that his company will not be collect any of the data that goes through 1.1.1.1.

So, how about that second promise of making Internet speeds faster? Well, that’s true to an extent as the promise is only for users visiting a website that Cloudflare manages and protects.
