Looks like it’s finally happened. Netflix is officially losing one of their cult like followed programs, The Office. Sure, it wasn’t produced or created by them, but at this point many peoples first time watching The Office was on Netflix. Not to mention the amount of binges when nothing else is around. NBC is officially pulling the program from Netflix in 2021 as they’re making their own streaming service 2020. The deal will be exclusive for five years. NBC made the announcement in a statement, saying that The Office is returning to NBCUniversal in 2021.
According to CNBC Netflix tried to make an offer to keep it, but the offer was rejected. Netflix was paying $90 million a year for the rights, but NBC topped the offer with $100 million. So it seems Netflix understood the appeal of having shows like that on their platform.
Shows like The Office are usually one of the most popular on the site because of how easy it is to watch. According to data analytics firm Jumpshot, The Office was the most watched Netflix show in 2018. That speaks enough about it’s popularity.
Well, not like Netflix Malaysia has The Office right now anyway, so how many of us are actually affected by this?
