Users in Malaysia were not able to access their favourite sites especially local websites with the .my domain on Friday with many not knowing why. It’s now clear that the domain administrator MyNic the sole agency under MCMC responsible for web addresses that end with .my encountered problems in maintaining the depository.
After being highlighted by end users, the agency quickly looked to restore the domain and released a statement soon after.
– MYNIC received a report of .my domain services intermittent outages late last night. Our technical team acted upon the report and are working together with Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and Verisign to resolve the problem. As part of the resolution to the problem, MYNIC’s DNSSEC key was refreshed and pushed to IANA servers. It is our highest priority to restore affected services as quickly as
possible.
No breach of customers’ data took place in this incident. As of 3pm today, the .my domain service has been restored by MYNIC, but the availability of some .my sites will take more time to be restored as DNS servers cycles its cache. We are actively monitoring the situation with the assistance of
SKMM and we will revert with status updates as and when such is necessary.
As of Sunday nearly all of the sites are accessible, however skeptics are curious on how MyNic could allow such an incident to happen in the first place. What might look like an inconvenience for thousands of users, a more sinister plot could have transpired. Hackers have engaged in similar tactics in the past when after the .my dns was compromised many of the sites later surfed, displayed messages from a hacker.
