MyIX releases Internet bandwidth exchange data and it’s a real doozy!
As Malaysia’s broadband penetration rate is on a constant rise, the bandwidth consumption is expected to increase as well. Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX), also known as Persatuan Pengendali Internet Malaysia, has released the official Internet bandwidth exchanged in Malaysia for the first 6 months of 2014 and it’s pretty impressive.
“For the first six months period of 2014, the aggregated Internet bandwidth consumption in Malaysia increased by 105% to a total amount of 306,960 Mbps,” says Chiew Kok Hin, Chairman of MyIX. “In comparison, the total 12 months Internet bandwidth consumption in 2013 stood at 349,277 Mbps.”
In a related report, IDC Research revealed that mobile penetration rate in Malaysia has also exceeded by 140%. One of the factors of the increase of smartphone users in the country is attributed to an effort under the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) known as the Youth Communication Package (YCP) that was rolled out in 2012.
Chiew states that the jump in smartphone users, as well as the huge advent of social media, have played a big role in the dramatic increase of Internet bandwidth consumption in Malaysia over the last two years. He adds that the e-commerce scene is another contributing factor to the increase of Internet consumption by Malaysians. One can only imagine how much more Malaysians will consume by the year-end.
