MWC 2018: 5G Coming To Intel Powered PC

PC users will no longer need to depend on wifi and tethered internet connection to work on their systems, often seen as a stumbling block from truly liberating the notebook from being mobile. With wireless speeds reaching an optimum level for such devices to be fully exploited, Intel is working with OEM vendors for 5G connected productivity notebooks and 2 in 1’s come next year.

Showcasing working prototypes at Mobile World Congress later this week, Intel is collaborating with Dell, HP, Lenovo and Microsoft to bring 5G connectivity to Windows PCs with Intel XMM 8000 series commercial 5G modems. It will show-off a first sneak peek of a concept 5G-connected PC – a detachable 2 in 1 connected by an early 5G modem powered by 8th Generation Intel Core i5 processors. Guests will be feted with a livestream video over 5G.

Intel has been quick to respond with arch rival Qualcomm already preparing with 5G processors for PC’s, its unthinkable for the biggest chip maker to be caught missing on the next wave of mobility now focused on its own turf, the PC market. The potential of 5G is immense, imagine the possibility in untethered VR from anywhere in the world, or downloading a 250 megabyte file in seconds from a parking lot. Or imagine being able to continue participating in a multiplayer game as you ride in an autonomous vehicle on the way to class. Limited by mobile phones,  PC’s will have no problem computing and managing such heavy tasks.

Working with multiple partners including on eSim, Intel is investing deeply across its wireless portfolio to bring 5G-connected mobile PCs to market, with benefits for users, like high-quality video on-the-go, high-end gaming, and seamless connections as users traverse Wi-Fi and cellular networks.
