Vivo seem to be on a roll after a rather quiet few months. The chinese company announced at MWC Shanghai today their plans for its new strategy to deliver a richer mobile experience in the 5G era. One of the markets they’ll be going into is that of augmented reality (AR). With anything revolving 5G pretty much the theme at MWC 19, it’s no surprise that AR is hot property at the moment, and Vivo is jumping in on that.
The company unveiled its first VIVO AR Glass today, which supports a dual-screen display and 6DoF technology. What’s 6DoF you ask? Well it stands for 6 degrees of freedom and it’s quite important when it comes to AR as 6DoF headsets will track orientation and position, the headsets knows where you are looking and also where you are in space. When a headset isn’t 6DoF (also known as 3DoF) it can only track the rotation of your head, and thus they are only truly suitable when seated stationary.
Anyway, the Vivo AR Glass connects to your 5G smartphone and through the magic of 5G, users can experience a range of applications such as mobile office, AR games, 3D high-definition video, facial recognition and object recognition on the Vivo AR Glass.
Once the Vivo AR Glass projects the content, the 5G smartphone will then act as the control that allows user to switch and select applications. For instance, when playing a game, the smartphone becomes the main console. Whereas on a mobile office setting, the smartphone will turn into a keyboard. The five types of applications that are currently supported by Vivo AR Glass are: mobile game, mobile office, 5G theatre, facial recognition and object recognition.
I got to test out the Vivo AR Glass for myself and it wasn’t exactly the most immersive experience. With my nose bridge being too high, I wasn’t able to really see what i’m supposed to be seeing, so maybe making the nose pads adjustable is worth looking into in the future. For the short 5 seconds or so that I managed to hold it in place though, it was a really fun experience. That 6DoF thing is legit. In terms of how the glasses look, well i’ll just let you guys decide for yourself.
No news on a release date as of yet but this sure is a statement of intent from Vivo.
