One of the bigger names in mobile Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games, Mobile Legends is now facing a big hurdle in their young existence in the mobile space. They are now being sued by Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends for infringing on their copyrights and IPs.
Of course Mobile Legends is not the only one being targeted by Riot – Mobile Legends: 5V5 MOBA, Mobile Legends: Bang bang, and Magic Rush: Heroes are three games being targeted in this exercise. The main infringer however is Mobile Legends, as they have clearly ‘lifted’ the artwork from League of Legends for their games on mobile. Before this, Riot Games did try to remove the games from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store – and they did succeed to remove the original Mobile Legends game from the two location. However the game came back as Mobile Legend: Bang bang soon after.
The lawsuit from Riot Games claims that the three offending games have made hundreds of thousands (and potentially millions) of dollars by copying the artwork and even the mechanics of League of Legends. At this point, it is impossible to see how the courts will not support Riot Game’s claims – it is clearly a copyright infringement for them. Of course as the majority of the developers are set in China, where IP and copyright are not usually seen as a barrier, this will probably not stop mobile games companies from continuing to copy Riot’s work for their own profit.
