The last time Microsoft talked about its Surface Hub 2, it was showcased as a digital smart board for modern workplaces. The device is a successor to the first Surface Hub, which acted as a digital whiteboard. At the company’s Ignite conference this week, Microsoft announced that the Surface Hub 2 will experience a staggered rollout. The company will release the hardware first in 2019, and then provide a hardware update and new software features in 2020.
The Surface Hub 2 features a 4k multi-touch system across a 50.5″ frame. The upcoming 2019 hardware will be called the Surface Hub 2S, and features removable processor cartridges. Accordingly, users can purchase an upgrade cartridge to the Surface Hub 2X in 2020.
Interesting features coming with the software update include dynamic rotation, tilting, as well as multi-user logins. The platform will make use of a specialised version of Windows 10, alongside Microsoft Office 365 support. Keep in mind that the Surface Hub 2S won’t have these options from the get-go. It instead uses the original Surface Hub OS.
Microsoft states that this rollout does not imply a delay in the Surface Hub 2. Rather, it’s a response to customer feedback, as users may prefer the original Surface Hub experience over a new and unfamiliar user interface.
