
Touted as the ‘most powerful and intelligent’ chipset, the new Kirin 980 from Huawei is sure to turn heads in the smartphone world. Combining the Neural Processing Unit (NPU), Cortex-A76 cores and the world’s first 7nm fabrication, the Kirin 980 promises advance features for consumers in the coming months.
One of the new features pushed by Huawei is the new image processing power of the Kirin 980. In a test processing 500 images, it can process the batch in about 6 seconds, or about 4,500 images in a minute. The NPU and processing cores working together delivers unmatched processing power on a mobile platform.
Huawei says that AI is a core of the new Kirin 980. This includes real-time recognition of subjects using the camera. Called Real-time Multi Person Gesture Recognition, this delivers scale-accurate representation of a subject moving in real time. This can be used in scenarios where subject movements are required to be logged or recorded hundred times a minute.

The Kirin 980 is the world’s first commercial SoC chipset using TSMC’s 7nm process and world’s first Cortex-A76 based CPU on the market right now. With industry-leading performance, it can launch apps quickly and provide a satisfying, totally lag-free experience for mobile users.
It is also the world’s first commercial use of the Mali-G76 GPU, which combines GPU upgrade technology and delivers 46% improvement in GPU performance and 178% improvement in power efficiency over the previous generation.
With the launch of the Huawei Mate 20 family happening sometime in October, we are looking forward to see the first devices with the new Kirin 980 SoC on the market.
