The Malaysian authority that regulates the cellular mobile service providers in the country, Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia SKMM or the English acronym MCMC, has issued over 50 compounds totaling RM2.29 million to the operators for offences on prepaid false sim card registration that took place from January to December 2015.
According to officer and advocate for MCMC En Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin, there has been a substantial rise in compounds issued to the operators to a staggering 89% from 2014. The telco operators were handed the compounds in March, September and the latest recently in December. 25 compounds totaling RM1.11 million were issued in March/September and the rest, end of the year.
The list of offenders in December:
Digi tops the list with 7 compounds worth RM350,000, Celcom Mobile and Axiata with 9 summons at RM430,000, Maxis received 2 with RM100,000 the rest were to XOX Com, Altel, Ceres and Merchantrade Asia. U Mobile and TuneTalk are the only one walking the line.
MCMC also warns the operators to be more vigilant on the issue as it involves security matters and criminal investigations on serious crimes reach a road block when retrieved mobile phones from crime scenes are not traceable due to falsely registered sim cards. The guideline for registration started in 2006 for prepaid users and has been left to agents at store front to ensure formal identification of purchasers of prepaid sim cards are recorded. Onus is on operators to make sure the vendors adhere to the guideline.
