At IFA 2016 in Berlin, LG Electronics showed off their latest developments in the Internet of Things field with a couple of cool innovations for future refrigerators. The first, the Smart InstaView Door-in-Door refrigerator comes with a large 29″ transparent LCD touchscreen that works as both a monitor and window. Just tap twice on the screen and is switches from opaque to transparent, meaning you don’t lose energy bringing the temperature back down every time you have to check on supplies.

The monitor is powered by an Intel Compute Stick, which allows users to view recipes, shop online or watch cooking videos.

The second fridge they displayed was the LG Signature. This one uses a panoramic super-wide lens on an internally mounted 2 megapixel camera to capture and send photos directly to your smartphone. No more having to make lists for groceries, just use the app to see what you’re missing for the week while shopping. The Signature also uses temperature and humidity sensors to detect when hot food has been placed into it to adjust itself accordingly. This results in cooling that is 30% quicker than existing conventional fridges.

Whether you feel it’s gimmicky or a real step in the right direction, it’s clear LG is taking the Internet of Things very seriously with their future products.
