LG Is Working On A Radical New Swivel Smartphone & It Sort Of Makes Sense?

LG is no stranger to trying something new, and possibly being the only one doing it. When the world was set on a foldable future, LG released their own iteration of the form factor with their LG V50, LG V60 and LG G8X. But they did so by bringing an optional secondary display in the form of a case that attaches to the phone. You could take the phone out of the case, use it as per any other smartphone, and pop it into the case for a foldable experience.

In theory, I see no reason as to why this wouldn’t work. I would much rather pay for the option of a secondary display, rather than investing into the very premium-priced foldable market.

But now, according to a new report from Korean news outlet ETNews, they’ve revealed that LG is working on an even more radical phone expected to release in the second half of this year. The phone, code-named LG Wing, is taking a new approach to display technology we haven’t seen in a while.

The Wing will reportedly feature a second 4-inch display, hidden underneath the main 6.8-inch display which is accessed by swiveling out the main display horizontally. From the image above, we can get a sense of what this really means. The second screen seems to allow for you to use your keyboard while the main display is in full view.

This secondary display can also be used in portrait orientation to show sites, a video, or other information while you use the main display. The LG Wing is also expected to sport Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 700 series process with 5G and a triple camera setup on the rear consisting of a 64MP main shooter.

Based on what I can see from the image, I imagine it being able to use a split-screen on the main display, while you type, watch a video simultaneously, or have WhatsApp open. Something along those lines, and truthfully, I’m intrigued to enough to want to know and feel how it works. We’ll get more information as the year goes, but for now, LG’s got me.

LG is also reportedly allow for the LG Wing to be customisable with a personalisation service which allows customers to choose the colour of the device. LG’s latest LG Wing is expected to come out in the second half of the year and will cost somewhere close to 1 Million Won (~RM3538).
