KLM Royal Dutch Airlines set a milestone when they introduced an augmented reality (AR) feature that allows passengers to check if their carry-on luggage is of the approved size. Anyone with an iOS or Android smartphone can take advantage of this just by using the smartphone camera, from anywhere, for free.
This move eliminates the hassle of second-guessing for passengers who often stress about whether their carry-on luggage is of the right size. All you need to do is activate the KLM app on your iPhone and launch the AR hand baggage check feature, which uses Apple’s AR technology.
The tool produces a virtual KLM suitcase that can be overlaid on top of the bag in real life. If the passenger’s suitcase fits inside the dimensions of the AR bag, they can rest assured that their carry-on complies with KLM’s baggage policies.
KLM’s venture into AR technology follows the footsteps of a similar launch by Kayak, a fare aggregator and travel metasearch engine. Their mobile-enabled AR bag measurement tool is a little more comprehensive than that of KLM’s, as it also compares baggage fee policies for all airlines tracked by Kayak.
