KLIA Might Use Your Face As The Replacements For Travel Documents

Airport is a place that never actually sleeps depending on the size of it. As busy as it is, the process of check-in could be a nuisance. Picture a 6 a.m. flight which means you have to be there for check-in at 4 and means you have to get up at 2 and reach there around 3. Definitely not something you please to do.

Hence, Kuala Lumpur International Airport provides a solution to this. Despite the numbers of flight been dramatically reduced because of Covid-19, KLIA came up with the idea of using facial recognition.

According to Bernama, this is a portion of the first phase of the Single Token Journey initiative. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) group CEO Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said the initiative will make use of facial recognition to provide passengers with a single-token biometric identification authentication and the token will replace the usual process of you showing your boarding pass at regular checkpoints.

The advantage from this upgrade is the time taken for someone to go through the check-in process to the boarding will be reduced. Also, due to the current situation of pandemic, this will reduce the contact between one another and reduce the document fraud cases.

The first phase is expected I be finished by the middle of the year, equipping 50 check-in kiosks, 20 check-in counters and 56 eGates of both KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 with facial recognition tech. Passengers can use the MYairports app to register your face upon their arrival to the airport.

As convenient as it may sound, few things should take its toll especially regarding privacy. It is very common to know that there are few systems using facial recognition that have their own controversies. Hopefully this one will turn out fine.

Forget your documents and just focus on your visuals because you might need it for your next flight as soon as the pandemic over.
