Donald Trump seems to be losing the plot and things aren’t looking pretty. On Monday, the president said that “When someone’s the president of the United States, the authority is total.”, meaning that he thinks that he has total authority over the coronavirus response in each state. The thing is, that stance is not supported by the Constitution and has been immediately rejected by legal experts and some governors.

Leading the pack of Governors is none other than New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who said on Tuesday that he wouldn’t abide by any order that Donald Trump might give to reopen New York in an unsafe manner during the coronavirus outbreak.

“If he ordered me to reopen in a way that would endanger the public health of the people of my state, I wouldn’t do it,” Cuomo said in an interview with CNN.

Cuomo has a point here. Should Trump order the premature re-opening of New York without the states consent, it would set up a constitutional challenge between the state and federal government that would end up going to court.

“And the worst possible thing he could do at this moment – to act dictatorial and to act in a partisan, divisive way. Keep the politics out of it.” he added.

Trump has seemingly prioritized the US economy over the lives of American citizens throughout the coronavirus outbreak and many in the country are worried that a premature re-opening of the economy would undo much of the progress that social distancing has made.

Thus far, 603,009 Americans have tested positive for the novel coronavirus with 25,136 deaths and 38,077 recoveries.
