Lets be honest, Instagram, I mean Facebook.. Oh wait, my bad— Instagram by Facebook, as they would have us call it now, has been gunning for the kind of engagement Snapchat has among the younger generation for the longest time. First Instagram ripped off stories, then it gave users the ability to send pics that will self destruct once opened and now, Facebook is apparently in the process of developing a new messaging app called ‘Threads’ that is supposedly meant to encourage constant, intimate sharing between users and their closest friends.

According The Verge, Threads will be a companion app to Instagram, meaning you will have to open a separate app to access it and users will essentially be able to share their location, speed, and battery life with friends, along with the usual text, photo, and video stuff using the tools already available on Instagram. It is currently being tested internally at Facebook.

Its worth noting that Instagram has previously worked on a standalone messaging app they named “Direct”. However, the company eventually had to scrap it because beta testers were frustrated about having to switch between Instagram and an additional app whenever they needed to send messages, which in all honesty is a valid point. It turns out though, that Instagram’s interest in “building new messaging experiences” is relentless and with Facebook on their side, they may just pull this one off.

In typical Instagram fashion, ‘Threads’ already sounds like and will probably be another knock off of what Snapchat already provides to its users. As it turns out, the average Snapchat user spends more time inside the app than the average Instagram user does. I’m pretty sure that makes instagram pretty insta-geram and ‘Threads’ is probably their way of hammering more nails into the metaphorical coffin that Snapchat keeps springing back out of.
