Huawei has their annual developer conference, and the main starlet of the show so far has to be HarmonyOS. No longer our beloved HongmengOS, it’s developed to be compatible with ALL devices, of so they say anyway.

CEO Richard Yu told attendees at the Huawei Developer Conference that HarmonyOS is “the first microkernel-based distributed for all scenarios,”.

The new platform will reportedly support smartphones, smart speakers, smartwatches, wireless earbuds, cars, computers and tablets. Yu also goes on to say that the platform will be able to support RAM sizes ranging from kilobytes to gigabytes. This might make it more attractive as there’s compatibility with a wide range of devices, and is Huawei’s play into The Internet of Things.

The Huawei CEO also mentions that the platform will eventually be able to support a range of apps. Those include HTML5, Linux and Android apps will be compatible with HarmonyOS. “They will all be able to run on our OS in the future” Yu adds. And this is all related to the ARK Compiler that HarmonyOS app development uses will also support Java, Javascript, C, C++ and Kotlin.

“If we cannot use Android in the future, then we can immediately switch to HarmonyOS” Yu explained, adding that migrating from Android to the the new HarmonyOS “is not that difficult”.

HarmonyOS can replace Android on smartphones “at any time” says the Huawei CEO, but will stick to Google’s platform for the moment. It’s sort of a preventative measure in case Google and Android will no longer be supported for Huawei. Smart planning by the team, but I feel this could be a bigger play in the long run.

And in regards to this, the first product that will include HarmonyOS will be the Honor Vision TV set, that’s set to launch in China on August 10th.
