Thanks to a listing on the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), it is now known that HMD, the current makers of the Nokia smartphone brand, has regained the Intellectual Property (IP) rights of the PureView branding from Microsoft. The software giant gained the IP rights when it purchased the Lumia brand from Nokia.

The last Nokia phone that graced Malaysia with the PureView technology was the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL, released over two years ago. HMD did sign an agreement with Zeiss, the optical lens maker that created the lenses made famous in the Lumia 1020. The PureView branding should jumpstart more discussion and research for new Nokia phones featuring the branding.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 made famous the capabilities of the PureView system, combining a large sensor alongside image stabilisation and optimised software for high-resolution image capture. Since then, we have seen many smartphones featuring built-in image stabilisation but only one recent phone also combines a large sensor for its camera system – the Huawei P20 Pro.

With PureView back in the hands of Nokia, we could see future Nokia phones feature the technology, or perhaps Nokia will re-imagine the Lumia 1020 for the modern age. We just have to wait and see.
