Whoever’s been around the internet long enough has already long heard of who Rebecca Black is. The infamous singer was the star and singer of the ever notorious, Friday. If you’ve forgotten the song, check it out below and be thrown into the past like I have when the song first dropped.
Okay now if you’re done watching the video, you’ll remember why this song was famous, and why Rebecca Black is now famous. But I mean, she was just a 13 year old when the video released, and it wasn’t even her idea. The video came about because Black’s mom paid $4,000 to get the song written and video made, and just starred Rebecca. It wasn’t even her song (which somehow makes it worse, who would write this?).
The problem arises when after the video went viral, everyone went after her; calling ‘Friday’ the worst song ever, and other variants of the sentence with the same meaning. It wasn’t a good time to be Rebecca, that’s for sure. People are just mean on the internet, you know? But I would say the backlash she got for this one tiny video was horrendous.
As of recent years, people have repented and started being nice because they realised how much of an a**hole they were being. But that doesn’t mean everyone did. The song ‘Friday’ current has 139 million views with 1.1 million likes and 3.6 million dislikes on YouTube. I mean, I can’t lie, even I did hate on her when this video released, but I was 12 too when the song came out.

Which brings me to the point of it all. While it’s been 9 years since the song released, people still reference it, sing it when they hear it, and many a times, joyfully.
Rebecca Black now has 1.1 million followers on Twitter alongwith other music she now works on, so that’s great to hear honestly. Good to see her rise above the hate from a video she didn’t really have much to do with, and turn it into something positive. To me, she’s an example of someone rising from a dumb thing they did on a YouTube video to make something of herself.
Guess it was worth it after all?
