Grass-type Pokemon Abundant this Weekend – and Future Legendary Events?

Pokémon Go just announced an influx of Grass-type Pokémons worldwide this weekend. While the team didn’t announce exact timings, the increase in frequency is quote to start in the vague timeframe of “afternoon” of 5th of May, and will return to normal by 8th May. (PDT – so it’s about 15 hours difference. 12am PDT is about 3pm here in Malaysia)

In other related news, Pokemon Go is about to host some official events.

The event is a multi-year partnership between Niantic and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation “to advance civic engagement in local communities around the United States through augmented reality experiences.”

The collaboration will play out at community events in several cities, including Knight-sponsored Open Streets events. These temporarily close off car traffic so people can use streets for walking, bicycling, dancing, playing and socialising.

“This partnership will foster discovery, bring communities together and promote engagement within public spaces by leveraging Niantic experiences and technologies including Ingress and Pokémon GO at select community events supported by The Knight Foundation.” Niantic wrote on their blog.

It was detailed that the first event with Pokémon Go will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina on 7th May as part of Open Streets 704. According to Niantic, the experimental event will include 16 PokeStops and two gyms along the 2.5 mile route. These locations will be highlighted on the official Open Streets 704 route map displayed at the event. To further immerse fans in the real-world experience, the physical location of each PokéStop will be physically marked along the route.

There will be more of these to come, and we’re not sure if it’s going to go global. Given that Ingress (what PoGo was built on) also hold what they call Mission days and other events globally – it won’t be far fetched to think Niantic will be taking a similar approach to PoGo.

While fans have been vying for a Legendary event, this event doesn’t look like it would be that. I personally think if those sort of events are going to happen, it might take shape in the form of something akin to Mission Days or Anomalies (Ingress players will get me) – a format that Niantic (and the Ingress community) has plenty experience in, running in their 5th year. Non Ingress players – Anomalies are Niantic run events that contributes to the storyline of Ingress game plays. Other events also take place but are run by the local communities, endorsed by Niantic.
