Joining other popular places in Malaysia, Guning Tahan is now available on Street View, standing at a majestic 2187 meters, the mountain is the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia. It is now part of attractions like Kinabalu Park, Mulu Park, Taman Negara Pahang and the majority of the public roads of Malaysia on Google Street View.

The images were taken by volunteers from Google Malaysia and the Malaysian Nature Society to capture the rich fauna of trekking up the mountaitn using the Street View Trekker, Google’s wearable backpack­mounted camera system. Mount Tahan is considered to be one of the toughest treks and among the most challenging mountains to climb in the region as there are several peaks to ascend and descend before reaching the main summit. A week or more is typically set aside to conquer the long distance wilderness trekking. Befitting its name, ‘Tahan’ means ‘to endure’ in Malay for it truly requires mental and physical fitness on the part of the adventurer.

There are three trails to the summit and all have been included in the new Street View special collection: 1. Kuala Tahan­Kuala Tahan 2. Merapoh­Kuala Tahan or Kuala Tahan­Merapoh 3. Merapoh­Merapoh while the Kuala Tahan­ trail is the oldest and most scenic trail. A return trip on this trail typically takes seven to eight days with a distance of 53km from Kuala Tahan to the summit. Climbers have to trek across undulating ridges and make several river crossings before finally reaching the foot of the mountain to make the final ascent. The trail takes around seven days with a 14km jeep ride from the Merapoh entrance and 32km of trekking to the summit. The Merapoh­Merapoh trail is the shortest, taking only three to four days for a return trip.
