No wires. No goggles. No wristbands.
For runners out there, these three things sound very attractive. We have always struggled running with our phone, earphone and water bottle. And to add all that, we only have apps to tell us how far and fast we’ve run. But none that can tell us how to improve our posture while running.
Now, with Lumo’s new technology for smart pants, this will be possible.
Lumo Run is a wearable system, fit into the waistband of your running pants, to show runners insights on their running form, which will help them run faster and avoid injuries.
This is achieved by measuring your cadence, bounce, ground contact time, braking, pelvic rotation and stride length while running.
Cadence is the term used to describe the frequency of foot contact with the ground in one minute, or steps per minute. If it is too low, it is an indication that you are either over striding or wasting energy due to excessive motion, for example, bounce. If it’s too high, you may be creating an inefficient shuffling pattern when you run.
The device will give you the optimum level for each biometric factor so that you can modify your running posture and reach a better result when you are running.
It will also give you real-time audio cues to coach you, while you run so that you can immediately improve your form, rather than getting feedbacks post-run.
The smart pants is even more amazing when you consider that it is just one small device put inside your waistband. The small but powerful sensor is machine washable and can last up to at least one month on a single charge.

Lumo also does not compromise on user-friendly features. Women’s capris are made fashionable with ultra-light, sweat-wicking fabric that provides breathe-ability and comfort.
Men’s shorts comes with 5” inseam and built-in briefs for support, zipped side pockets and waistband pouch for keys and coins.
You can certainly compare it with Nike+ device. Users have also come up with accessories that they can wear on their own shoes rather than Nike’s.
However, Lumo’s CEO, Monisha Perkash emphasises the need to get the garments because: “Having it placed on our waistband helps the sensor to be placed correctly and also be more stable. And so the readings that you get are far more accurate.”
Runners looking to shorten their running time and avoid injuries, which will also let you run faster and longer, can get the wearable garments at US$99 for men’s shorts and US$119 for women’s capris. It will start shipping March 2016.
