Have you ever read about a new update for an app, OS or smartphone, and thought to yourself, that’s great but I’m not going to be able to enjoy it anyway? Why? Because many developing countries, including Malaysia, still have internet speeds akin to a turtle’s crawl in many parts of the countries.

Developers in the Silicon Valley come up with all sorts of fancy schmancy new features on their app and OS as if the entire planet has super-fast, always-on internet connections. It only stressed  how much these developing countries are lagging behind.

Facebook now installs ‘2G Tuesdays’ in its offices, an optional initiative that slows down the internet speeds comparable to what you get in rural India and other developing areas. This method should help remind Facebook’s staffs that there are users out there who still take minutes to load an ordinary web page.

The company wants its employees to do anything that can save data so that more users can enjoy Facebook even with 2G internet connections.
