Epson Ecotank series has a range of monochrome printers which target mostly small and medium enterprises. The Ecotank printers are smartly designed to have a much smaller footprint compared to its predecessor, the InkTank series. The new range of printers now have integrated ink tanks which contributed to the smaller footprint and makes it a perfect choice for most SMEs because it will only take up a small space in the office.
The M1120 is finished in white with some black accents giving it a professional and not a boring look to it. We have mentioned earlier about the small footprint of the Ecotank series, which means it can fit into most space in an office without taking up so much space. With such a small footprint, no unnecessary space is wasted when placing this printer anywhere in an office. The foldable cover and retractable tray opens up just enough to hold the papers for print also without taking up too much space.
The top of the printer has a lid which can be opened to look at the internals of the printer as well as the ink tank itself. Refilling the ink is pretty straight forward which requires you to lift the blue cover of the ink tank. Epson has uniquely designed the ink tank and its refill ink bottles to work like a lock and key. That way, ink bottles that are not made for the M1120 will not be able to refill the ink tank.
There are five buttons sitting flushed on the printer. Although some buttons have familiar looking icons, there are no labels on the buttons to show what each button does. Not only do these buttons function individually, there are some “combo” pushes required to perform certain hidden functions. All these information is available on the manual which comes with the printer.
Print Setup and Solutions
Remove all the plastic wraps off the printer and place it at a rather convenient place but also close to the router to take advantage of the WiFi connectivity. Connect the printer to a power source and power it up before refilling the ink. First time switching the printer on will usually take as long as 10 minutes for it to enter the standby mode. To refill the ink, push the ink button on the printer and hold it for five seconds until the indicator blinks in orange. Lift the lid covering the internals of the printer and you will notice the arrow on the tank aligns with the arrow on the printer body.
This M1120 comes with WiFi direct and wireless printing options along with a USB port for a wired connection. Using the wired connection for printing does not require many steps. However, it is not that simple for the wireless printing solutions. Both the WiFi and WiFi direct printing solutions require the “combo” button pushes. To enable WiFi direct, push the WiFi and the network status report button located beside the WiFi button simultaneously until the two lights below the WiFi button starts flashing. Once pushed, wait for the second indicator below the WiFi button to light up. Print the network status sheet by pushing the power and network status report button together until it starts printing. In the printed sheet, information such as the SSID and password required to connect to the printer directly will be given.
As for the WiFi connection, push the WPS button on the router first and then hold down the WiFi and stop operation button (last button) on the printer until the two lights below the WiFi button starts flashing. Once the printer connects to the network successfully, the first indicator below the WiFi button will light up to indicate a successful connection. All that is left to do is load the papers into the paper tray and connect to the printer using your preferred device. For mobile printing solution, the Epson iPrint app is available for download on both the Android and iOS platforms. For computers running on Windows or Mac, visit the Epson website to download the software needed or use the CD which comes included in the packaging.
Epson claims the printer is able to print 32 pages per minute. How true is the claim you ask? Well, the printer managed to print 32 pages via USB connection on an average of 1 minute and 2 seconds. Printing wirelessly took an average of 59 seconds. However, there is a catch to this. All these are only possible using a computer and printing a document with about 50% of text in draft quality. Printing via Epson iPrint for mobile will not be able to achieve such speed because there aren’t any options to print in any other quality except standard by default.
Printing a document in draft mode doesn’t give the best print quality the printer has to offer. By default, the print quality is set to standard. In standard quality setting, the documents are printed in a really good quality. As Epson claims, the printed documents do look like those were printed from a mono laser printer. Let’s be honest, it is impossible for an inkjet printer to print exactly like a laser printer. It is definitely hard for an inkjet to achieve a print quality close to a laser printer but Epson nailed it with the M1120.
Ink Bottle and Quality
Epson uniquely designed their ink bottles to work like a key. That way, there will be no forfeited inks can be used to fill the Ecotank printers because without the right key (ink bottle), the lock (ink tank) cannot be “opened”. Topple the ink bottle and it will not spill because there is a valve in the nozzle which opens only if the bottle is fitted to the ink tank.
The ink bottle that comes standard with the printer is the Epson 005 high capacity black ink. This one bottle alone is able to yield about 6000 pages but this may vary depending on the content of the printed documents and the quality set to print. What’s interesting about the ink which the M1120 uses is that it is resistant to water and smudges thanks to the genuine pigment ink.
The Epson Ecotank Monochrome M1120 printer is without a doubt a printer which gets the work done for you. On top of that, if you are worried that a huge business inkjet printer would take up so much space in the office, the M1120 could potentially be a viable option. Let’s not forget how such a small printer which gets most of the work done uses very less power and cuts down on the printing costs significantly.
Epson sets a retail price of RM 717.00 for the Ecotank Monochrome M1120 printer. This printer comes with four years of warranty and the original ink refills can be purchased at a much affordable price at only RM 31.10 for the high capacity black ink bottle (005) or the cheaper option would be the standard black ink bottle (005s) selling for RM 23.00.
