ZeniMax and id Software have sort of won a case against Oculus. They claimed that Oculus had been unlawfully exploiting intellectual property, including trade secrets, copyrighted code and technical know-how around VR technology. According to the plaintiffs, ZeniMax had been heavily invested in the technology that Oculus was using.

These complaints were filed a few years ago, but only made it to court last month. ZeniMax’s claim was for a whopping US$4 billion, but the jury decided that Oculus was innocent of almost all of the charges. In fact, they said that Oculus was only guilty of failing to adhere to non-disclosure agreements.

This failure has won ZeniMax a cool US$500 million, about US$200 million of which will come directly from the pockets of Palmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe, the founders of Oculus.

Though it’s not quite the verdict either company would have hoped for, both can walk away from this on a slightly positive note. Oculus and its parent company Facebook can reaffirm the public that its technology wasn’t stolen or misappropriated in any way while ZeniMax can build a swimming pool full of that VR money.
