Malaysian durians are still top of the choice for China, the largest consumer of the King of Fruits, even during the closure of the border in that country, demand has now reached pre Covid days since the opening of the lockdown.

According to Commercial Director with the Chinese Embassy, Shi Ziming the interest among the Chinese for durians never abated during the pandemic, despite the restriction on cross border imports, the thorny fruit were still consumed, however he said the supply is back to normal and growing every day.

China imports over 3200 ton worth of the fruit every year, Thailand is the biggest exporter followed by Malaysia, it is also known the Malaysian Durians are more premium and are usually used for gifting for friends and family. Among the species, Musang King is a very popular variety selling at RMB200-400 on average. The export numbers from Malaysia makes a small segment of the total imports into China, our durians are only found in selected cities which gives an opportunity for traders to broaden their market and capitalise on the growing demand.

Its time traders get back to the farms and harvest those amazing fruits and start filling up the void left during the Covid 19 lockdown. An untapped economy waiting to be plucked!
