Samsung, at CES 2018 reveals a new “The Wall” TV, as well as improvements to the Family Hub fridge and other Internet of Things devices.
The Wall
Samsung reveals a 146-inch modular TV featuring self-emitting MicroLED technology. Taking the name “The Wall”, it is the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED 146-inch TV. The TV is self-emitting with micrometer (µm) scale LEDs has no need for backlight and colour filters, and has no size limit, resolution or form.
Featuring a module-based, bezel-less design, “The Wall” allows consumers to customize their television sizes and shapes to suit their needs. The individual modules can be fitted like jigsaw puzzle, creating any ratio screen. The screen can adapt to serve different purposes, such as creating a wall-size display for multiple spaces.
Samsung has showed off the world’s first QLED TV featuring 8K AI technology, which will launch internationally, starting with Korea and the US during the second half of 2018. Using a proprietary algorithm to adjust screen resolution based on picture quality characteristics of each scene, the AI continuously improve picture quality and transform any type of content from any source into a high-resolution 8K. The 8K technology include detail enhancement, to upgrade standard definition content; noise reduction; edge restoration function, to clearly outlines on-screen objects; and automatic sound adjustment for different content, such as sports events or music concerts.
Samsung also enhanced Samsung Smart TV’s connection and convenience functions, including Bixby, SmartThings and Universal Guide. 2018 Samsung Smart TVs will also offer easier sharing and connectivity, thanks to SmartThings, Samsung’s IoT platform hub. It offers a simpler way to control the television and sync with other devices. 2018 will also see the launch of Universal Guide – an advanced program guide which automatically recommends TV programs and content according to a user’s preferences.
Family Hub
Family Hub refrigerator is a winner of the 2018 CES Best of Innovation award, offering wide range of smart features. This includes syncing up food storage with meal preparation, keeping family members be more in-sync, and providing enhanced entertainment. Family Hub will also integrate with Bixby voice control and Samsung’s SmartThings IoT ecosystem.
Along with the SmartThings ecosystem, users can control and monitor their connected home from the Family Hub screen. The SmartThings app connects the Family Hub with hundreds of Samsung and third party compatible connected devices. In addition to seeing what’s inside their fridge or leaving a note on the White Board, users can do other things include seeing who is at the front door, adjust the thermostat, check on a sleeping baby and more, from the Family Hub screen.
New for 2018, Meal Planner provides recipes for the family based on food preferences, dietary restrictions and food expirations dates. With Bixby, Family Hub can recognise individual voices and provide personalized information based on preferences. It will provide a read out of the news, weather and calendar updates tailored to the user.
Samsung will expand the platform to four new 4D FDR models, bringing the total to 14. The new Family Hub will be available this spring.
