Team PC managed to snag a preview of Marvel’s latest entry into their Cinematic Universe. Here is what we think of Ant-Man.
By now, I should have known better than to doubt Marvel’s capabilities of making a movie about comic book superheroes. The concept of a man shrinking down to the size of an ant and getting all that whole “ants can lift things 10 times their weight” schtick should make for a highly absurd movie. Needless to say, I’ve been proven wrong as Ant-Man proves to be highly entertaining.
It’s All There In The Trailer
Ant-Man tells the story of Scott Lang, a robb- sorry, burglar who just wants to find a way to get closer to his daughter but is unable to do so due to his criminal past. Failing to hold down a proper job, Lang decides to break into the house of one Hank Pym and in the process, stumbles onto the Ant-Man suit. After that, we have our standard hero origins story of him training, planning and attempting to save the world from Darren Cross and his Yellowjacket suit.
If you’ve seen the Ant-Man trailer, the whole story is pretty much summarised in the plot with no shocking deviations or anything of the sort. Barring a pretty sweet cameo, Marvel played safe with Ant-Man, but still manages to make the movie entertaining.
Size Matters
Seeing as Ant-Man revolves around a guy shrinking down to the size of an ant, the way the scale is represented in the movie is pretty much the most crucial part to get right. Needless to say, Ant-Man succeeds in doing so as some of the set pieces, particularly the first time Lang shrinks down, is very impressive, more so when you experience it in 3D as some of the effects can be surprisingly overwhelming. It also leads to some pretty funny moments, the most obvious of which is Yellowjacket getting run over by Thomas the Tank Engine.
Pint-sized Fun
Overall, Marvel’s attempt to bring Ant-Man to the silver screen has resulted in a pretty fun movie as well as making the whole concept of Ant-Man believable. It’s not the deepest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, nor is it the most ambitious, but it has charm, comedy and some really cool scenes in the movie to make it worth a 3D ticket purchase.
