CD Projekt Unveils ‘Witcher IV’ Featuring New Female Protagonist

CD Projekt SA has revealed the long-anticipated Witcher IV, an addition to its beloved fantasy role-playing series. The upcoming game, showcased in a nearly six-minute pre-rendered trailer during The Game Awards, introduces Ciri, the adopted daughter of the franchise’s iconic protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, as its central figure.

The trailer depicts Ciri saving a young woman destined for sacrifice by her father and village. Sporting some of her father’s familiar gear, Ciri takes on a monster with a blend of swordplay and magic, familiar elements that long-time fans of the series will recognise. The game is being developed using custom Unreal Engine 5 technology, though no release date has been announced.

CD Projekt’s previous release, Cyberpunk 2077, generated considerable hype but was marred by bugs and flaws upon its late 2020 launch. The company worked to regain fan trust with numerous updates, bug fixes, and a major expansion that received critical acclaim last year.

The Witcher series has sold over 75 million units, according to CD Projekt’s 2023 report, making it one of the most successful video game franchises. Fans of the series have been waiting nearly a decade since the last main instalment, with the previous game briefly allowing players to control Ciri.
