Two of the early starters in mobile technology, Nokia and BlackBerry have been leveraging on each others technology with agreements in place and rolled out millions of hardware based on that understanding. But when one party falls back on the handshake and stops paying up citing infringement and other reasons, the matter, as all patent related cases are obviously brought to the International Chamber of Commerce International Court of Arbitration.

The case has now been ruled in favour of Nokia and ICC has awarded the telecommunication company US$137 million to be paid by BlackBerry over the dispute. The decision ultimately confirms that BlackBerry had failed to make certain payments to Nokia under a patent license agreement between the parties.

BlackBerry is still contending the infringement on its intellectual property and will seek to raise the issue in the European courts. Nokia argues there is no merit on the accusation.
