Remember when you opted for unlimited swipes on Tinder? Well, the company made 1.2 Billion USD last year thanks to you.
That’s right folks, it turns out that you’re not the only one who can’t stop swiping on the damn app. Match Group, which is the company that owns Tinder (and also Match.com, OkCupid and Hinge) disclosed that Tinder brought in a total of 1.2 billion USD in revenue last year alone. To give you some perspective, Match as a whole earned 2.1 billion USD last year so Tinder actually made up for half of the company’s total earnings.
According to Match, Tinder averaged about 5.9 million subscribers in Q4 2019. 5.9 million! In Q4 alone! That’s A LOT of single people looking for love~. In case you don’t actually know how Tinder subscriptions work, the app sells these subscriptions in the form of packages that offer users different kinds of perks, such as unlimited swiping, an increase in the prominence of their profile and the ability to swipe from any location in the world.
Tinder has really been diversifying its offerings in a bid to remain relevant with Gen Z users. The app now has special in-app events such as interactive Swipe Night, where users match based on the decisions they make while watching interactive content. It’s crazy to think how much money companies like Match are making off the business of love, but also hardly surprising given how badly we inherently crave validation and the feeling of being wanted and what not.
In Tinder related news, the app just recently rolled out a safety feature that will make catfishing a thing of the past.
