Axiata is sticking it’s hands further into the gaming pot with the announcement of it’s inaugural eSports tournament, Axiata Game Hero, which will pit Free Fire – Battlegrounds (“Free Fire”) players from across South and Southeast Asia against each other for glory, and of course, a chance to win a share of MYR 500,000 in prize money. That’s a lot of dough!
Axiata Game Hero is the first mobile gaming tournament of it’s kind in the region involving operating companies under the Axiata brand; namely, Celcom Axiata (Malaysia), Smart Axiata (Cambodia), XL Axiata (Indonesia) and Robi Axiata (Bangladesh).
For this inaugural tournament, players will compete in Free Fire-Battlegrounds–a mobile battle royale game developed by Garena and licensed by Axiata’s partner, Techninier Sdn Bhd, a home-grown Malaysian company.
Set on a remote island, the game pits 50 players against each other in10-minute sessions to determine the winner, which is basically the last person standing at the end of the game. The top three squads from each participating country will be flown to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the Axiata Game Hero finals in November, where they will battle it out for the grand prize.
With a projected market value ofover USD $74.4 billion in 2019, eSports has seen tremendous growth in recent years, so it’s no surprise that Axiata is investing heavily in becoming a name that is synonymous with gaming.
