At the Mamak Table: April Fool’s Edition

Yes, we’re back – with more table flip- uh….. roti-canai-flipping goodness.

Well, as you are all aware, we had a really eventful April Fool’s yesterday – from the king of fools themselves (ahem. Google) to all the local brands joining in the fun. We’ve scoured through the web and compiled a list, so today we shall talk a bit about our harvest for this year.

First off, Google. Ah the king to rule the pranks. Although Google is famous for their many local variations, Google Gnome takes the top pick for this year, along with a playable Ms. Pac Man on Google Maps.

I’m sure you guys can search a lot on the other April Fools prank on other sites like the Verge, CNET, more on Google’s roundup for the year. However, let’s look at some of the local pranks as well as some that we really enjoy ok?

For instance, we quite like this from Lexus. To be honest, like Google Japan’s Panda last year, I really wish this was real. Alas, it’s only for the first day of April.

Another one that I really wished was real is this Yoga Processor from Samsung. Come on! Don’t tease us! Can you imagine having flexible phones? That would be so cool.

Another one I really enjoyed was Alexa. Uh… Petlexa. Alexa, can you feed my cat please? That aside, the commercial is SO ADORABLE.

How about some local mentions?

Xiaomi did a very patriotic mention of Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind a RM41 phone (RM401 if you check Facebook instead) even if it’s bright yellow.

Lazada opted for a more romantic approach. To be honest, with everyone jumping up and down about data analytics, I won’t be surprised if shopping habits or other unrelated data became a matchmaking tool.  Although I think my shopping habits will reveal that I’m un-date-able.

Honor took a jab at the multiple camera trend and even tried to appeal to the fans of #saltbae. I’m sold at “storage expandable to an external hard disk”.

We also introduced to you the Google Bubble Wrap Input – again from the quirky Japanese. We wrote our very own At the Mamak Chair talking just about this “groundbreaking innovation”. So be sure to check that out!

Razer took the chance to reveal their robot…..which curiously seems to be modelled after Robi. Who’s Robi? Read our report on Robi! (Which, unlike the green April Fool’s version, is 100% real and you can actually buy it. It’s not green though.)

Happy Fresh tried to use the VR approach to things and while the joke was really obvious, we enjoyed how ridiculous it became as you read on.

BMW went full on Fabulousity with unicorn parts. Comes with colourful headlights! I could really do with that. I mean – rainbows and unicorns, guys!

StarCraft joined in the fun with the Overlord Announcer – which is oddly CUTE.

We at liveatpc.com also joined in to have some fun with Moto. Although they initially hinted at the return of the RAZR – turns out it was a RAZR Moto mod.

Finally, the Honda comes with horn emojis! We could totally use this for Malaysian roads. Actually on second thought, maybe not. We are expressive enough with our hands!

Honourable mentions:

We had a lot of fun, but we also had some that isn’t exactly under the classification of Tech. So here they are

  • IKEA in the skies
  • Emirates’ wonderful concept airplane – which would’ve been totally RAD.
  • Ribena Durian – weird, but in the Malaysian spirit of everything durian we are adding to the honourable mentions list.
  • GSC’s awesome prank – the link is now removed, but essentially it’s about Fast and Furious 8’s delayed release, but also free cupcakes in conjunction with their birthday! Happy belated birthday GSC, we really enjoyed the prank, although getting free cupcakes sent to our office would have been the icing on the cake. Maybe next year? 😉 (We joke. We love you anyway.)

Did we miss any? We’d love to hear from you. It’s been a long long session of the Mamak Table. Tell us if there was a special prank that you’ve enjoyed! Or perhaps you’ve played a prank on your friends? Keep it safe and harmless! Till next week! (Or next year, for the Mamak Chair!)

Boss kira!
