It wasn’t too long ago that Apple announced it will allow ad blocking apps on its Apple Store to be downloaded by iPhone users. This move raises some eyebrows as it is clear the ad blockers will block all and any adds, including ads on Safari, iPhone’s web browser.
Now, we have found out that Apple had removed several apps that created a risk of “man-in-the-middle” security breaches from its Store. The banned apps had committed an offence by blocking ads from native apps such as Apple News.
An Apple spokeswoman said in a statement, “Apple is deeply committed to protecting customer privacy and security. We are working closely with these developers to quickly get their apps back on the App Store, while ensuring customer privacy and security is not at risk.”
The “working closely together” part seems to be half true as “Been Choice,” one of the banned apps, ensures that they are trying to comply with Apple’s policy and resubmit to get back on the Store.
However, it remains to be seen how strict Apple will apply its policy and whether this entails removing the root certificate and VPN monitoring features altogether. Meanwhile, the Apple spokeswoman says that the company would release a support page to help users remove the app from their phones.
Do you think the banned apps was wrong to do this? It is one of the dangers of installing an ad blocker, I suppose. But there are ads out there that could potentially endangers your privacy as well, because it can track you and sometimes even access your personal info. I guess, we have another dilemma thrown at us with all this ad blocking business and all the while, making users feel like they can’t trust anyone or anything.
