Apple will reportedly be unveiling its headphones during this year’s WWDC, as well as the reported cheaper AirPods model.

According to Jon Prosser, who has revealed both Apple and Google leaks in the past, the company plans to unveil its long-rumored over-ear phones during WWDC in June this year.

The new AirPods model, reportedly called the ‘AirPods X’, however, is planned for a later reveal:

While there have been renders of what Apple’s over-ear headphones may look like, there isn’t any for the AirPods X.

Also mentioned in the tweet is a presumed end goal to “phase out Beats”. While Apple technically does own Beats now, this would spell trouble for the famed product line, originally founded by music producer and rapper, Dr Dre and Interscope Records co-founder, Jimmy Iovine.

It’s also backed by claims by Prosser that Apple’s brand of AirPods means more to them (clearly) than Beats does. It has apparently been selling their Beats headphones at a discount to their employees to thin out stock, too:

Again, these are just his claims. There may be entirely different reasons for Apple to discount Beats products to its employees. Maybe it’s just their way of saying thanks for working hard during the entire COVID-19 situation?

Even if Apple does want to “phase out Beats”, they can’t do it so quickly. They only have a handful of AirPods products and one upcoming over-ear headphones. As much as variety goes, Beats clearly has more going for it than Apple does.

It would also be kind of a stupid move on Apple’s part. Beats is selling well, so to discontinue a line purely out of favour for another would simply be foolish for Apple to do.
