Looks like all the Twitter trolls and people gesturing the richest of the rich to fix the world have won. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has announced that he’ll be committing $10 billion to fight climate change and protecting the earth. The new fund has been dubbed the Bezos Earth Fund, and it’s got a catchy ring to it, honestly.
He announced this new venture into saving the planet on Instagram, because there’s no other way to announce anything these days:

Bezos mentions that the global initiative will help to fund scientists, activists and NGOs as well as “any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world.” He then goes on to say: “We can save Earth” which sounds like something a superhero would say right before they kicked some alien a**. Someone close to the fund told The Verge that they would not engage in private sector investment, bur rather focus on charitable giving only.
He then finally goes on to mention that he will be committing $10 billion to start, and that the grants would start begin issuing this summer. No idea really on how the process is going to go considering they were scarce for details in the post, but we can expect more info coming soon.
Just as a recap, Bezos is worth about $130 billion, so $10 billion is quite a lot to commit, but not enough to put a dent into his net worth. But I think this, as a whole, is a start and would need the collaboration of many companies and entities to really make a difference. Hopefully with this first step, others follow suit and help to solve the problems regarding climate change and the Earth right now.
