The death of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers has spurred the entire world into demanding for not just justice to be served, but also an end to the systemic racism that’s become so ingrained in American culture. The message was clear: George Floyd’s death will count for something, and an entire nation has united in making that happen.
With the four officers involved currently awaiting trial for murder, George Floyd’s funeral service has gotten under way at the Fountain of Praise Church in Houston, Texas. The service was attended by around 500 guests which consisted of loved ones, politicians and celebrities all wanting to pay their final respects to a great man.
From the church, Floyd’s body will then be taken to its final resting place at a cemetery in Pearland, Texas right beside his mother. The last mile of the procession will be conveyed in a horse-drawn carriage. Members of the public who wish to pay their respects will be able to do so, with barriers being erected along the route to allow that to happen safely as the procession passes.
Floyd passed away in Minneapolis last month after a white police officer planted his knee firmly on his neck for nearly nine minutes, in spite of the fact that Floyd was pleading for him to stop. The incident, which was filmed by passers by became viral and eventually sparked demonstrations all across the nation, all in solidarity with Floyd.
President Donald Trump even got involved and thus far has done nothing but politicise the issue from the get go. From tweets that incite violence to videos that clearly depict the president trying to ride the wave of Floyd’s murder in order to get reelected, Trump’s response has been nothing short of embarrassing.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden while less obvious with his intentions, also seems to be trying to make the most out of the situation for his own gain, but what can I say.. politicians will be politicians. Joe himself is on thin ice after remarks he made about African Americans not being black if they even considered voting for Mr Trump.
Whatever it is, Americans will have the chance to define the kind of nation they want to be in about five months when they cast their votes. Here’s to hoping the choice is the lesser of two evils.
