The app, David’s Disposable, has apparently surpassed “well, well over a million” downloads, a person with knowledge of the numbers reportedly told The Verge. No exact numbers on how many downloads the app has, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s downloaded even more. The app has in-app ads, but users can pay a $1 subscription fee to remove them and it becomes a premium service. But realistically, what is this app? It slaps on a ‘vintage’ filter, and that’s pretty much it. The only reason it’s popular is because of whose app it is, and I don’t blame them for that. But let’s call it what it is.
It also topped the Apple’s App Store for it’s most popular free apps, even in front of Disney+ and Instagram. But that wasn’t for long, but as of time of writing, the app is #4 in Photo and Video section of the App Store. The reason why it was such a hit was mainly because of Dobrik’s second Instagram account he started where he featured pictures he took with a disposable camera.
And of course, because it’s David Dobrik, the account blow up and has almost 3 million followers on that account. It was just a bunch of shots of him and his friends, and the shenanigans they got up to. Even that was able to amount to a sizable following.
But anyway, the way the app works is that you use it to take a photo, which applies a filter that makes the photo appear as if it were taken by a disposable camera. Users then wait until 9AM the following day for the photos to ‘develop’, and then you’ll be able to access the photos you’ve taken. It’s a nice gimmick, but I don’t see it lasting very long. The photos can also then be ordered from the app, and they’ll be delivered to the user.
It’s available in the Apple App Store, with no word on Android availability yet.
