Stan Lee May Have Passed On but You Can Still Catch Him at the Movies

The beloved Stan Lee is as much a superhero as the characters he helped create, having a hand in almost all of Marvel’s most celebrated heroes, including the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange (except for Captain America).

The 95-year-old godfather of Marvel Comics, who was also once its president and chairman, died on Monday due to alleged worsening conditions of pneumonia. He had publicly announced his long- fraught battle with pneumonia on February this year.

Also known as the King of Cameos, Stan Lee has appeared in more than 50 live-action and animated Marvel projects, and even has a bonus surprise DC cameo under his belt. Though fans may no longer look forward to his staple appearances in Marvel movies, they can still catch the legend in two animated movies this year.

First he’ll be appearing in Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (Disney owns Marvel Comics) on November 21 for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo. Stan’s first appearance in an animated cinematic project was in 2014’s Big Hero 6, where he played T.J. Miller’s Fred the team mascot character’s father.

Next up is Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” – also an animation – on December 14. Spider- Man continues to be the jewel of Stan’s career; he created the character with artist Steve Ditko. Peter Parker was an immediate runaway hit due to the relatable anxieties, fears, and joys of the teenage superhero.

Before appearing in moves, however, Stan first showed up in Marvel’s comic strips unintentionally when the artists would draw him in as a joke. He would then follow it up by including some funny dialogue balloons to tie him in.

Since the news of his passing broke, many Hollywood stars, friends, and fans have taken to social media to share their sorrow. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds put it succinctly: “Damn… RIP Stan. Thanks for everything.”
