The 3rd Cyber Resilience And Info Security Conference officially begins today in Setia Alam. Datuk Wira Dr. Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation is there to help launch the event.

The event happens as the world continues to struggle against cyber-attacks as well as data breaches. With the recent Cambridge Analytica data leak continue to embroil Facebook in a scandal, you can understand why many organisations are seeking to bolster their protection against potential cyber-security breaches. Even in our region we’ve seen cyber-security issues make news headlines. The recent Uber Singapore data breach, one of the largest in the region ever, is one such example.

“Technology helps us achieve a better future,” says Allen Lee, CEO of New Horizons Malaysia. “But cyber-criminals seek to attack and disrupt the Internet of things.” He adds that many businesses, especially SMEs, don’t believe that cyber-attacks can happen to them. Keynote speaker Melvin Foong also points out that thousands of Malaysian companies are unaware that their data were breached.

Datuk Wira Dr. Abu Bakar also notes how the Fourth Industrial Revolution – driven by the Internet – has changed not just how we work, but how we live as well. “Years ago, when Malaysia first introduced Wi-Fi, there was a lot of backlash. And yet, now, many people want free Wi-Fi as criteria when selecting a hotel for example.”

He adds that the internet and its development has moved the barrier between the real world and the virtual world. As such, it is crucial Malaysian organisations equip themselves with proper, well prepared cyber-security.
