I think we all share the same excitement when we see Malaysia on something popular. We smile at the mention of our country in TV series, movies, anime, and video games. It’s even more exciting when we get to see those familiar places or settings in Malaysia appearing on screen.

While Malaysia has been mentioned, referenced or even appeared on our favourite TV series and movies, we don’t see much of our country in video games. The list isn’t quite long so for this post, I will only mention 3 popular games where at least one level or chapter was set in or referenced Malaysia.

Iron Man 2 

Let’s start off with something Marvel. Iron Man 2 is an action-adventure video game loosely based on the film and was released in 2010. Malaysia was featured in one part of the game where Iron Man decides to reprogram an Arc Armiger after War Machine defeated it. Using the reprogrammed Armiger, Iron Man and War Machine assault an A.I.M. base in Malaysia.

Though it doesn’t look like Malaysia because the graphics were pretty bad in 2010 so it’s not very detailed and we couldn’t see the Malaysian part of it but hey it’s good to know our country was in an Iron Game right? You can watch the walkthrough down below.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Now I am a huge fan of the Uncharted games. Always play it with my cousin and we have a blast on all games. Okay, back to the topic. We actually were not expecting Malaysia to be in the game when we first played it. The 3rd chapter of the Uncharted 4 game is dubbed as “The Malaysia Job” and Malaysian digital art studio, Passion Republic was responsible for the game’s art assets.

There was a scene with a map along with the text ‘Hasnul Hadi’, who is now the VP of Creative Content of MDEC, a pioneer in the Malaysian Creative Digital Content Industry. There was also an existing phone number in that scene and if you dial the phone number back then well, you’re in for a surprise! I’m not sure about now though but hey why don’t you try it?

“The Malaysian Job” is not just the title of one of the game’s mission but it was a reference to Passion Republic’s assignment for the game. The several references to Malaysia in that chapter and a super cool Easter egg. Watch the walkthrough here.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

Another old game on this list is the Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, released back in 2002. Honestly we need to be featured in more newer games. Someone do something about this please. We got lots of cool places that you can go and do in games.

So anyway, the hitman character is given a mission in Malaysia where we will see the character standing below the Petronas Twin Towers. The mission is to locate a hacker name Charlie Sidjan and kill him while staying undercover. Seems simple enough.
