Use Your Phone on a Desktop: Samsung DeX (Also, There’s Stuff About the Gear 360)

Following the Galaxy S8 announcement, Samsung also unveiled the DeX, a device that allows you to access your phone on a desktop through DeX.

The DeX is designed for professionals who need the mobility of phones as well as the functionality of a desktop to improve productivity, without the need to carry several devices.

Compatible with the Galaxy S8, Samsung DeX provides an Android-based desktop-like experience that enables users to seamlessly access apps, edit documents, browse the web, watch videos, reply to messages and more, directly from the smartphone on a larger display, using keyboard and mouse.

The DeX station connects the Galaxy S8 to an HDMI compatible monitor, and connect to any Bluetooth-enabled, USB or RF-type keyboard and mouse. The Android UI is redesigned to fit a bigger screen, with functionalities optimised for use with a keyboard and mouse and includes multiple resizable windows, contextual menus and a desktop version Web browser.

Samsung collaborated with Microsoft and Adobe, to enable Samsung DeX compatibility with Microsoft Office and Adobe mobile apps, including Adobe Acrobat Reader mobile and Lightroom Mobile, allowing desktop-like functionality. The DeX also allows users to remote access virtual desktops for using Windows OS-based applications, through partner solutions including Citrix, VMware and Amazon Web Services.

The DeX Station comes fitted with two USB 2.0, Ethernet, USB type-C power-in and a cooling fan. The DeX Station also features Adaptive Fast Charging (AFC) technology to charge your Samsung smartphone quickly while connected. The DeX Station will be available globally with the Galaxy S8 and may be offered as a packaged bundle depending on region.

Also announced was the new Samsung Gear 360, a 4K resolution-capable 360-degree camera that is  lightweight and compact. The Gear 360 is equipped with 8.4MP with F2.2 on dual fisheye lenses. The Gear 360 is integrated for various viewing modes; users can access editing tools and photo effects and filters to create customised content.

The Gear 360 also allows for real-time content sharing to social media platforms, as well as syncing to compatible smartphones and computers.
