U Mobile’s Mobile Legend Campus Championship Kicks Off At APU Bukit Jalil; First Campus Champion Crowned

U Mobile kicked off their Mobile Legends Campus Championship 2019, with the first leg of league held in APU Bukit Jalil, a sprawling campus renowned for their gaming community. The campus tournament will be spanning across a plethora of 22 local and private universities across nine states in West Malaysia, and PC.com will be sure to cover it!
The game of choice for the tournament is none other Malaysia’s favourite mobile game, Mobile Legends Bang Bang. A second reckoning for those who lost out in 2018 and newcomers alike, this year, the tournament features a total prize pool of RM 50,000, 5 sets of Razer Phone 2’s and 400 in-game diamond, while the runner up walks away with 200 in-game diamonds courtesy of Montoon, the game distributor. All campus champions will then automatically qualify for the grand finals.

Other Fun Activities going on at the Campus Championships!

The first day of the tournament was jam packed with more than just gaming. There was a cosplay corner— where students dressed up as their favourite characters in the game, and play the hidden gems in the mystery box challenge game. Students have to dig with their hands inside the mystery box with unknown items, in search of diamond gems. There was also other attractive prizes up for grabs included brand new phones such as the Samsung A50, OPPO F11 Pro and Huawei 3i, awaiting for winners with the best cosplay pose and caption posted in their Instagram, and hashtag #UMobileMLCC2019.

Spirited Students, With A Flair For The Games Ahead

The fun filled activities and attractive prizes made for a spirited, and lively campus. Having students take part in a gaming tournament right in their campus made things convenient as it gives them a chance to take a break from their daily tasks of attending lectures, studying or writing assignments. One of the teams that participated in the tournament, FruityCutie actually walked out of class and saw the on-going tournament, and decided to take part and try their luck in the games. Amazingly, they won on the first day, thus eligible to enter the round of matches on day two.

After two days of hard fought battles, the winner of day one and day two came down to FruityCutie and X Project. FruityCutie, the winners on day one, already had an extra day under their belts and were therefore, well prepared for the battle that awaited them in the final day of day two. It came down to the wire but they eventually beat out X Project, to become the campus champion for APU campus. The campus champion won a cash prize of RM 1,000, and received their entrance ticket to the Grand Finals taking place later in the year.

When we asked Victorino, Captain of FruityCutie on his thoughts about tournaments happening on campus, he had this to say;

“It’s a good thing, I mean, I liked it. Suddenly there’s a tournament on campus and we were like wah, I think we should try. We had just finished class actually, and we came down and saw it.”

To the Victor(ino), Goes the Spoils

The Winners, FruityCutie, getting their prize after their win at APU Bukit Jalil

We got to speak to the captain of FruityCutie, Victorino, after their win on the first day. When asked about how the matches went, he said it was a close one and that the slightest mistake could have cost him the match.

“I could say it’s a close call, I mean the enemy was also alarmed and we were being pushed in the middle as well. One misstep and we could have lost.”

When asked on a scale of 1-10, how confident he was in his Mobile Legends ability, he said 6. Well, clearly, he was being modest, because he and his team went on to win the first leg at its home-ground.

This concludes the first leg of the tournament, and FruityCutie is the first team to advance to the Grand Finals scheduled to happen later in the year, where all 22 Campus Champions across nine states in West Coast will compete to be the best.
