Sad, sad news for karaoke fans as Twitch announced that Twitch Sings, the streaming platform’s live karaoke game, is shutting down at the end of this year. Could 2020 get any worse?

Why is the game shutting down? According to the company, they’re shutting down the game on January 1st, 2021 in order to “invest in broader tools and services that will help support and grow the entire music community on Twitch.” I guess that’s alright but still.

Launched in 2019, Twitch Sings lets streamers choose a song from its library to perform. Singers could belt one out solo or get friends to join for a duet. However, the channel does not appear to have attracted a huge audience; while Twitch ‘s overall category of Music has more than 3 million followers, Twitch Sings accounted for only 161,000 of those followers.

“Looking ahead, we’re excited to share more about the future of music on Twitch and how we’re working to make Twitch the best place to bring you closer to the artists and music you love,” the company said in post announcing the shutdown.

The Amazon-owned streaming platform says it releases the complete backlog of 400 new songs so fans can step up to the microphone for one last encore performance before things end for good.

Since the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak, Twitch ‘s music category has increased. While music remains generally a small category for Twitch, about 17.6 million hours were streamed during the month of July.

As of December 1, Twitch Sings will begin removing videos and as for the remaining on-demand videos, including past broadcasts, clips and highlights will be removed by the end of January 1. If you want to archive your past broadcast, check out the instructions on Twitch’s on-demand videos section.

Twitch Sings is not the only karaoke game out there but we’re still sad to see it leave. If what the company said is true, then we’ll get to see another music feature on Twitch in the future. Here’s to hoping. For now, warm up your vocals to sing on Twitch Sings one last time.
