Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has issued further clarification with regards to the December 17 article posted on several media outlets titled, “TM aims to upgrade Streamyx services to unifi by March – Eddin Syazlee.”
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister YB Eddin Syazlee Shith has mentioned that ,
“The government is aiming to upgrade all Streamyx user services to unifi through Telekom Malaysia by March next year” and “If the users are out of range or have no unifi access, then the alternative is that their Streamyx speed will be upgraded to 8 Mbps or (they) will receive 4G LTE access.”
TM would like to clarify that for Streamyx customers who are residing in non-unifi coverage areas, they will be upgraded double of their existing speeds (up to 8Mbps), for free. And where there is coverage, they can also opt for our wireless 4G LTE service.
These upgrading exercise are being implemented in stages and are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2019.
TM fully supports the Government and Ministry of Communications and Multimedia’s vision to deliver high speed broadband with a wider nationwide coverage to all Malaysians via the recently announced National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP). Also, TM looks forward to playing their part in its implementation and success.
Upgrading Streamyx customers
To date, TM has successfully upgraded close to 60% out of over 340,000 Streamyx customers who are residing in unifi coverage areas to unifi at the same price of their current plan.
Remaining Streamyx customers who have yet to sign-up for unifi are encouraged to grab this opportunity for the free upgrade.
TM would like to reiterate that for Streamyx customers who are currently residing in a non-unifi areas, it is committed to continuously invest in the best fit for purpose technologies to bring them high speed broadband.
Thus far, close to 70% of the upgradable Streamyx customers who reside in non-unifi coverage areas have been moved up to double their current Streamyx speed where technology permits at the same price of their current broadband plan, leaving another 65,000 who have yet to move up to higher speeds.
And due to copper technology limitations, the copper network is only able to deliver speeds up to 8Mbps.
However, in order to effectively address the remaining Streamyx customers whom we are unable to upgrade, TM looks forward to a collaborative win-win approach with the Government as well as with other industry players. It will continue to play an active part in the dialogue, debate and conversations that are ongoing in the industry towards addressing these outstanding issues to move forward.
Streamyx customers who are eligible for the speed upgrade will continue to be contacted via email and phone. Customers are encouraged to update their latest contact details i.e., telephone number and email address to facilitate this process. This can be done both via the unifi portal and unifi care app.
