STRAWBERRIES. Love em or hate em, you gotta admit they’re pretty good. Ok for real though, whether or not you love or hate strawberries, I think we can all agree that strawberries at the very least are nice to look at. To put it in Marie Kondo terms, strawberries spark joy, and taste pretty darn great too.
That being said, the good people on TikTok have seriously putting the general sentiment towards strawberries at serious risk by exposing the fact that worms and other strange critters live inside the fruit. That’s right, strawberries aren’t just fruit, they’re homes too! Just dunk the damn things into salt water and see for yourself.

These strawberry exposés seem to be going viral on TikTok now, and why wouldn’t it!! This whole time we’ve been washing our strawberries with water like dumbasses when there are little critters living in the skin of the damn fruit!

Now that I’ve gotten all my disgust out of the way, time for some good news. It turns out that the bugs aren’t actually harmful to humans, so putting them in your belly is aye-OK! As reported by The Independent, who cite the Cloud Mountain Farm Centre, the small worms are likely the larvae of Spotted Wing Drosophila, a non-native fruit fly that lays its eggs in ripening berries.
Best part is, these little critters are found in a variety of fruit too, not just strawberries. That’s right, sometimes ignorance is bliss. I’m sorry guys. But hey if you don’t care much for ingesting harmless worms then I guess you learned something new today :’).
If you’re wondering how to get rid of these bugs, just soak your fruit in salt water for a while, wash it again in running water and you should be good to go.
